Viral Facebook Post Has Wright County Health & Human Services Looking to Re-Direct Donors

The Wright County Health and Human Services Department issued a statement Tuesday due to an influx of calls to their offices concerning the donation of suitcases for children in foster care.

The statement reads as follows: “While we appreciate your willingness to donate suitcases to Wright County Health and Human Services for children in foster care, we are not currently able to accept these donations due to space constraints. If you know a foster family in need of suitcases, please reach out to them directly or donate your unneeded suitcases to your local thrift store so they are accessible to those in need.”

In January, a Facebook post brought awareness to the to the issue of foster children that are often asked to transport their belongings from location to location in a trash bag. The author of the post urged readers to donate an old suitcase stating that the donations could “help just a little bit with the self esteem of these young people.” Over the last few years, there have been similar pleas for suitcase donations for similar causes, but this post went viral and reached people throughout the country

Over the past few weeks, Wright County Health and Human Services and other county departments have been receiving calls inquiring where people could drop off suitcases, enough that it prompted the department to ask that such donations be diverted directly to foster care families due to the lack of storage space at HHS.
