The Wright County Highway Department announced today that, due to consistently warm weather projected for this week and thawing that will accompany that, the 2021 Spring Load Restrictions on county highways throughout the county road system will take effect at 12:01 a.m. Friday, March 5, 2021.
The purpose of the spring load restrictions is to protect roads and extend their lifespan. At this time of year, the underground frost level boils out and makes the base under the road bed malleable until the moisture comes out of the ground.
The restrictions typically remain in place for eight weeks, which would take them to approximately Friday, April 30.
Thanks to improvements over the years to the Wright County road system, there are only four small segments of roadways that are at a 5-ton limit. The majority of roads have a spring load restriction level of 9- or 10-ton, which typically only applies to large trucks with a full load.
