License Center Doing Brisk Business

A Message from the Wright County License Center:

2023 has been a busy year in the License Center. To date, we’ve had more than 61,000 people check into to our lobby kiosk for service. The drive-thru also saw substantial growth this year as we have already doubled our transactions compared to last year. License Center staff have already processed more than 30,000 driver’s license/identification card applications as well as nearly 30,000 motor vehicle transactions (such as tab renewals and title transfers). In November, we surpassed our 2022 totals in both driver’s license and motor vehicle transactions. Currently, we are seeing an 18.1 percent increase in driver’s license applications from last year.

Although the transactions are going up, our new location allows for more efficiency when processing transactions. Although wait times can vary, overall we are seeing average wait times around 10 minutes and average service times under 10 minutes. This means most of our customers are in and out of our office within 20 minutes. Of course, time of day/month can affect wait times as well as the number of transactions requested or the complexity of the transaction will also impact that service time for the customer.

The License Center also added administering Class D written exams to the services we provide when we moved to our new location. This service has been very heavily utilized, and we are closing in on 6,000 exams administered since opening our exam room. Appointment availability continues to be a struggle statewide for both written exams and the road test. We opted to become a third-party proctor last year to help meet the demand in our area. As a third-party proctor, we can administer the Class D written exam in eight languages, including audio versions. We are not authorized to administer road tests, motorcycle permit tests, or Commercial Driver’s License permit/endorsement tests. We continue to see our exam appointments fill up every week, and we are one of few offices that offer walk in exams (on exam days) to also help meet the needs of the community.

Another area of service often overlooked is the amount of phone calls we receive. In the first three quarters of 2023 (January-September), the License Center received/returned over 26,000 calls. That averages out to be roughly 150 phones calls per business day.

We look forward to seeing you at the License Center and to quickly and efficiently assist you with your transactions.
