Parks & Rec Announces Winter Activity Schedule

The Wright County Parks & Recreation Department has announced its Winter Events Schedule for youth and adult/family programs.

YOUTH PROGRAMS

Little Naturalist – Wednesday, Feb. 14: Snowy Owls; Wednesday, March 13: Red Pines. Description: For the little naturalist in your home. Start the morning at the Robert Ney Nature Center for story time, followed by nature play and crafts. Open to children ages 1-5 (must be accompanied by an adult). When: 10:30-11:30 a.m.; Cost: $5 per child.

Nature & Learn – Thursday, Jan. 11: Cross Country Skiing. Description: Robert Ney Nature Center is offering class for homeschool students and groups alike of children ages 6-12. This program covers basic skiing skills (skis and poles provided if needed). When: Two sessions – 9:30-11:30 a.m. and 1-3 p.m. Cost: $8 per child.

Saturday Fun at Ney – Saturday, Jan. 13 and Saturday, Feb. 17. Description: Two Saturdays this winter we have nature crafts for families to partake in at Robert Ney Nature Center. When: 10 a.m. to noon. Cost: Free.

Winter WonderKids – Every Tuesday from Jan. 23 to Feb. 13. Description: An exciting afterschool program to embark on outdoor adventures in the great outdoors for students ages 6-12. This a four-week program and will cover topics including skiing and snowshoeing (skis and snowshoes provided). When: 3:30-5 p.m. each session. Cost: $25 total for all four sessions.

Winter Fest – Saturday, Feb. 17. Description: Bundle up for some frosty fun at Winter Fest in Otsego Prairie Park. Activities include snowshoeing, dog sledding, a snowman building contest and more. This event is a partnership with the City of Otsego Parks & Recreation. When: 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Cost: Free.

Winter Rentals – Ongoing. Description: Starting Jan. 6, snowshoe and ski rentals will be available for use every Saturday and Sunday at Robert Ney Nature Center and Bertram Chain of Lakes Regional Park. When: 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily. Cost: $5 per rental.

ADULT/FAMILY PROGRAMS

Lantern Ski – Saturday, Jan. 20. Description: Jon Running Fearless at Ney Park for a night of cross-country skiing. The trails will be groomed and lit with lanterns to help guide you through the winter wonderland of Ney Park. Inside the Nature Center, there will be sweet treats and warm drinks to enjoy. There will also be an outdoor bonfire to stay warm. When: 6-9 p.m. Cost: $5 if you need to rent skis; free with your own skis.

Family Snowshoe – Sunday, February 11. Description: Discover winter’s wonders off the beaten path as we venture through areas accessible only by snowshoe in winter in Robert Ney Memorial Park. Either bring a pair of snowshoes or reserve a pair when you register. When: 2-3:30 p.m. Cost: $7 if you rent snowshoes.

Sweetheart Snowshoe Hike – Saturday, Feb. 10. Description: An evening at Bertram Chain of Lakes Park that includes a catered meal follow by a guided tour. The evening will end with a dessert social at the chalet. When: 6-8:30 p.m. Cost: $50 per couple for the meal.

Buckthorn Hiking Sticks – Sunday, March 10. Description: Select, cut and create a buckthorn hiking stick. Learn about invasive species, how to identify buckthorn shrubs and why removing them from the parks system is essential. There are two sessions – the first session is for families and will have a shorter presentation with a focus on hiking-stick making; the second session will be for adults and will focus more on buckthorn identification, removal and the history of removal in the county parks (hiking sticks will be created in this session). When: Family class from 1-2:30 p.m., adult class from 3:30-5 p.m. Cost: $5.
