A Message from the Wright County License Center:
Those who have received license tab renewals in recent weeks may have noticed a change that takes effect Jan. 1, 2024. There are now two prices listed on the renewal form – one price for getting your tabs renewed at a local office that is $1 more than if you mail in your tabs to the Minnesota Department of Driver and Vehicle Services (DVS).
In an effort to keep funds local, earlier this year the Minnesota State Legislature approved a $1 surcharge for license tab transactions that only DMV offices can collect. This law prohibits DVS from collecting this additional surcharge because the majority of the fees already collected on tab transactions are allocated state fees. In 2023, two DMV offices in Minnesota closed and the current trends are suggesting that more local DMV offices may close their doors in the future.
The true intent of the State Legislature was to support local DMV offices across Minnesota and prevent additional revenue to be collected at the state level. We hope that the $1 surcharge will not deter our residents from utilizing their local DMV offices. Thank you for using the Wright County License Center, and we continue to look forward to meeting your licensing needs.
